JDA’s Planogram Generator: Frequently Asked Questions, Part 1

Welcome to the first installment of a five-part series exploring the most frequently asked questions about JDA’s Planogram Generator. This blog series, written by Plantensive’s Practice Director for Category Management, Eric Bachrach, will be updated weekly. Now, on to your burning Planogram Generator questions!

Your customers continue to drive the need for a better localized and curated assortment at the shelf. Retailers and suppliers alike are under fire, not just from online retailers, but from customers who expect a more satisfying shopping experience. Greater need for consumer insight, assortments that drive category growth, and merchandising strategies is putting a strain on organizations trying to be first in line to the shelf and top of mind to the customer.

Recently, a JDA-sponsored event in Minneapolis threw a spotlight on solutions in the JDA Category Management suite that support this need to be nimble, agile, and first to the shelf. Among those solutions is Planogram Generator. Planogram Generator has evolved to support the simplest to most complex merchandising strategies, fixtures, and mass production, all the while helping you achieve greater speed-to-shelf and reducing the cost to better serve your customers.

Many questions were asked during the two-day session in Minneapolis, a great number of which focused on JDA Planogram Generator. For the next 5 weeks, we’ll address some of the most commonly-asked questions and provide in-depth answers to help you on your way to an automated approach for localization.

1. Does Planogram Generator support pegboard merchandising?

Yes, it does. In fact, the JDA product development team has done an incredible job enhancing Planogram Generator’s peg merchandising capabilities. Some pegboard merchandising enhancements include: lateral motion on rows, merged demand for multiple positions, linking pegboards, grouping and sequencing of positions, banding, bottom row peg position to shelf position interaction below pegboards, signage support, and much more.

2. Does Planogram Generator support display fixtures and merchandising collateral that may be merchandised in-line with standard planograms?

Yes, it can. However, like pegboard merchandising functionality, the version of Planogram Generator that you are using will determine which enhancements are available to you. The latest version of Planogram Generator now has the capability to support display fixtures, signs, and other merchandising collateral that are included in a planogram. One great example is the “Fixture on Fixture” feature, which allows the user to create displays that are merchandised on shelf in-line that contains a subset of products.

Signs can be copied from a Template to a Target and can also be assigned to specific products, groups of products, or segments. The signs’ placement behavior can be directly linked to the behavior of the product or group of products. For example, if a product moves from one shelf to another, the assigned sign will move with the product position. This logic can also be applied to the product allocation behavior. For example, if the product does not make it to the shelf, the assigned sign will not be placed either.

Another fantastic feature now available is what’s called “Flex Space”. This allows the user to allocate a reserved amount of space on a planogram for local products, DSD items, or store-level discretionary merchandising. Planogram Generator can resize this space for each of your stores to ensure the percentage of Flex Space is consistent.
